In the peak of the holiday season, it’s important to take the time to gather with folks to celebrate. Attending events is a great way to explore, experience, and immerse yourself in the holiday spirit. Though there are hundreds of events around the Bay Area, here are five we think you might be interested in.
1. Glowfari at Oakland Zoo
The Glowfari is an amazing Oakland attraction featuring a ‘safari of lights’, covering the hillside and zoo with shades of blue, purple, and pink. This event goes through and replicates the beautiful Oakland wildlife, vibrant reefs, and a glowing safari. The event is from 4:30 PM – 9:00 PM, opened November 7th and will stay open until January 25th. Make sure to check it out before Christmas!
2. Fairmont’s Gingerbread House
Located in San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel, Fairmont’s Gingerbread House is one of the biggest, most iconic life-sized gingerbread houses. Opened November 22nd, you can continue to visit throughout the holiday season. With options of booking private dining within the gingerbread house, I find it to be a unique experience one needs to have when in the city.
3. Santa Visits around the Bay Area
Santa is all around the Bay Area and now is a great time to visit him. He’s available all month, On December 13th, he will be holding visits in Fairfield, Piedmont, San Anselmo, Alameda, Menlo Park; on December 14th, he’ll be in Moraga. On December 18th, he will be available in Castro Valley and San Jose, and again in San Jose on December 20th. Take your time to make memories with family and friends by visiting Santa together!
4. The Nutcracker
Available all around the Bay Area are performances of the Nutcracker, a holiday classic. Frenchy Sarkis ‘27 says, “Me and my family have watched our family friend perform in the ballet for about two years now and we are stunned by the talent of the ballerinas.” Take the time to attend the Nutcracker at the SF Ballet as they are well known for their production.
5. Ice Skating
Now is the season to ice skate, so find the closest rink and start skating! Some good options of ice rinks include the Oakland Ice Rink. The Oakland Ice Rink is available all year round, with food and drinks available. Another is the holiday rink in Union Square, San Francisco. This rink is open November 5th-January 19th and is a personal favorite for Rowena Boulton ‘27. She says, “I’ve gone there every year with my family since I was about 8 and it’s always been my favorite part of my holiday”.
Have a great holiday season Dragons, explore the bay and enjoy the fun times!!
