Mr. Barnes
My name is Damian Gerard Gutierrez Barnes and I was born in Sacramento, the eldest of seven children. I attended Jesuit High School there and moved to the Bay Area to attend Santa Clara University, obtaining a B.S. in Political Science with a minor in Ethnic and Religious Studies. Following graduation, I entered the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and served the Brooklyn (NYC) neighborhoods of Borough Park, Gravesend, Coney Island, Bensonhurst, and Sunset Park as a community organizer with Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens, mostly helping with job training programs, heating/gas arrears relief, and opening teen centers.  Later, I ran an afterschool program and summer school at the Loyola Youth Center in Crown Heights.  I returned to California, obtained and cleared my credential from Santa Clara University, and received my Master of Arts in English (Writer's Craft Program) at Holy Names University in Oakland.  This is my 20th year in Education, the last nine of which have been at Bishop O'Dowd High School.  In addition to being the department chair for English, I also work as an academic coach for the Academic Support Program and direct the student newspaper, literary and art magazine, and yearbook.  I am also the adviser to the DESI/Southeast Indian Affinity Club.  In my free time, I am working on publishing my first novel.
