Mr. Barnes, Adviser

Damian G. Barnes is the Journalism teacher and Adviser to Student Publications at Bishop O'Dowd High School.

He attended Santa Clara University, obtaining a B.S. in Political Science while minoring in Religious and Ethnic Studies. He was a columnist for both his high school (The Plank) and college (The Santa Clara) newspapers and Executive Vice President of the Associated Student Body. Upon graduation, he entered the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, serving as a community organizer in Brooklyn, New York, teaching resume and interview skills, helping to arrange mortgage/heating/gas relief, and opening teen centers. He returned to California, obtaining a teaching credential from Santa Clara University, and later earning a Master of Arts in English from The Writer’s Craft Program at Holy Names University in Oakland. Mr. Barnes is a very busy person at O’Dowd, serving as the emeritus chair of English, a liaison and academic coach in the Academic Support Department, a co-coordinator of the Close Up Government Trip to Washington, DC, the co-adviser to the DESI/Southeast Indian Affinity Club, and the teacher of Journalism, overseeing the student newspaper, literary and art magazine, and yearbook.

In his spare time, he walks his dog Priscilla all over the Bay Area and writes! Mr. Barnes is the author of the new novel, Melton and the Hereafter, which was recently and enthusiastically reviewed by O'Dowd teacher and poet, Connie Mae Oliver, for Vol.1 Brooklyn!
