November 15 marked the day of the long-awaited boxing match between content creator, Jake Paul, and infamous boxer, Mike Tyson. The advent was advertised to be livestreamed through Netflix and people could watch no matter what their subscription to the app was. On that day, 108 million people came to the livestream to watch the two fights: one side of the audience wanting Jake Paul to win, the other wanting Jake Paul to taste defeat from the legendary boxer himself.
In the beginning of Netflix’s first live stream, the event hosts talked about the boxing match featuring those two powerhouses. By the way they spoke of the event, it was clear that they were heavily in favor of Mike Tyson which, in context, is clear because Jake Paul was nothing but a YouTube influencer, unaware of his broader, younger audience. Meanwhile, the hosts looked to be around the millennial age range and Mike Tyson was a large influence on pop culture back then. The split in generational times is not only relevant to the audience themselves but also to the fight between 27-year-old Jake Paul and 58-year-old Mike Tyson.
Three boxing matches occurred before the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight as per usual. First was the Super Middleweight fight between Goyat and Nunes. Nunes is a Brazilian content creator and Goyat an Indian professional boxer. In a fight where Nunes played defense against a flamboyantly taunting Goyat, Goyat won the fight decisively. The second fight was Barrios vs. Ramos for the WBC Welterweight championship. Ramos was the challenger and Barrios was the defending champion to defend his title. After a twelve-round fight where both men were knocked down early on the second and sixth rounds, the results ended in a tie and Barrios successfully defended his title. The last fight was Taylor vs. Serrano who were fighting for the World Lightweight Championship. This fight was a rematch since Taylor had won a split decision against Serrano years before. Drama ensued between the two fighters after Serrano sustained an injury above her right eye, which worsened in round six. Additionally, Taylor was accused by the referee of grappling too much telling her “Watch the holding, you’re better than that” and was taken a point off because of said reason. Despite the conflicts, Taylor won by unanimous decision, and the fight was considered the most exciting out of the entire fights in the Tyson vs. Paul event.
Finally, the anticipated main event occurred between the two: Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul. Both had a showcase of their past fights, Mike Tyson having the more impressive and longest of the two. In addition, their entrances to the ring were telling of their personalities. Jake Paul came in first, rolling into the stadium with a car and sitting next to his brother, Logan Paul. Mike Tyson came into the stadium by walking to the ring, and cheering from the crowds ensued. The crowds were expectant, hungry for a fight of the generation. The fight could’ve gone either way and the audiences were on the edge of their seats because of that.
The fight lasted a measly eight rounds and it became obvious after round one that the fight was one-sided. Jake Paul was the one to initiate the attacks while Mike Tyson was defending himself from the blows and eventually caught Paul with a counter punch of his own. Unfortunately, anytime Mike Tyson initiated an attack, Paul would step back and the punch would not connect. After moments of constantly holding and Tyson biting his glove, Jake Paul won the Heavyweight fight.
It was no surprise that many people were disappointed by the Tyson vs. Paul fight, especially those who wanted to see Jake Paul defeated after winning against many other famous boxers. Many blamed and joked about the age range of the two boxers, which then led to jokes about Jake Paul deciding to fight someone much older than him, such as former President and centenarian Jimmy Carter. Most complaints weren’t of the fight, surprisingly, but of Netflix’s streaming instead. Because Netflix was hosting such a large event with thousands of people streaming the event on the site, this led to the site buffering and unresponsive for some watchers, causing them to miss parts of the highly anticipated live stream. If Netflix were to do another live stream on their website, they would need to make sure that they have the necessary support to hold such a large audience at a single time.
